Whitby Abbey ⛪️ First founded in 657AD, the Abbey has provided sanctuary for sailors, monks and visitors, pillaged under the reign of Henry VIII, bombed in WW1 by German Battlecruisers and provided inspiration for one of the greatest gothic legends of all time - Dracula. In 1890, Bram Stoker visited Whitby and it is said that this became the inspiration for Dracula. Count Dracula comes ashore at Whitby and takes the form of a black dog and runs up the 199 steps to St Mary’s Church in the shadow of the Abbey Ruins. A legend that predates Dracula is St Hilda. According to local legend, sea birds that fly over the Abbey dip their wings in honour of St Hilda. Another tells of a plague of snakes which Hilda cut the heads off and threw into the sea, resulting in the presence of Ammonite fossils which can be found across the rocky foreshores and cliffs of Whitby. The first photo shows a First Edition of Dracula by Bram Stoker, and an ammonite found in the cliffs of Whitby, with a snakes head carved into it to symbolise the snakes killed by St Hilda. In collaboration with @craftycovewhitby the Til Parted By Death handfasting cords and engraved coffin box. Made by me for last month’s @thegothicgathering where I had a stand, these handfasting cords with a red and a black glass charm in the middle and finished off with two black ‘Til Death’ coffins, gained a lot of interest. Once the handfasting ceremony is over, these cords will be kept safe in their specially created, black velvet lined coffin box, made by the talented Crafty Cove Crew. Like Dracula, they didn’t stay around long as this coffin and its contents also left Whitby to go to their new home. I will be reunited with them when they are removed from their coffin next year for their owners handfasting ceremony. Availabe to order from myself or from Crafty Cove Whitby (in whatever colours you choose).
