Central Park’s Bethesda Fountain as seen through the area’s terrace, which is made of New Brunswick sandstone masonry.
The fountain’s centerpiece is The Angel of the Waters, by sculptor Emma Stebbins, created to commemorate the Croton Water system that originally delivered fresh water to New York City in 1842.
In her book “Central Park: An American Masterpiece,” Sara Cedar Miller, the official historian of Central Park Conservancy, calls Bethesda Terrace “a groundbreaking masterpiece” of 19th-century architecture and a “secular cathedral.”
