Dual Main Systems

We can build a dual main systems from a variety of devices and rope diameters. The Clutch and Maestro are two very good options as they have a built in pulley allowing for quick and easy change overs. The MPD being an older device should not be used due to its design. If using the Maestro or Clutch they will dictate rope diameter and should you wish to use smaller diameter rope then you will need to build your own. A popular option is VT Prusiks in max over 1 configuration with an ATC style device.

The two ropes should be treated as one. They should be as close together as possible to allow for greatest load sharing potential. The whole point of a dual main system is load sharing which reduces the chances of rope failure and if rope failure does occur it minimizes the shock load potential.

My preference is for one operator to operate both devices. The hands operating the devices and the hands controlling the rope tails MUST belong to the same person. This minimizes human error. Having two operators actually increases the risk as there are now two brains that need to communicate which doesn’t work well in practice. A tailor can provide additional security by feeding the rope tails to the operator. If the operator overcomes the safety of the devices there are now extra hands on the rope to help with control.

#tacticalropes #dualmainsystems #ttrs #rope #rescue #roperescue #nfpa #sar #fire #techicalrescue #mountainrescue #clutch #maestro #mpd #twintension #ropesystems
