Lorraine Gordon Booth, 19. She was arrested in a stolen car with a 14-yr-old boy. Dubbed “The Beardless Hobo” because she was masquerading as a boy (swipe for her boy look). The boy she was with had no idea she was actually a girl. Lorraine said she ran away from home to escape her evil step-dad and all she wanted was to get to an aunt in Minnesota so she could finish school. She totally fooled everyone in Berkeley until they discovered the truth a few days later — that she had been in plenty of trouble with the law since first being sent to a Girls’ Home for “larceny and general incorrigibility” at the age of 14. But sympathy from the jail matron influenced the judge and Lorraine got off with only 30 days in jail. Six months later, she was the getaway driver in a bank hold up. The newspaper account of that is hilarious — like a scene from some wacky old silent movie. R. B. Schuler, a passing “autoist” saw her partner run out of the bank with a gun and “gave chase in his automobile. He picked up Policeman James Thompson, who clung to the running board of the car as it careened in pursuit of the fleeing bandit machine. When the bandit car crashed, Schuler stopped his car so suddenly that he was hurtled into the wreck. He landed on his feet with his gun in hand.” This mugshot is for the bank robbery. She was sentenced to 5-Life in San Quentin. Alameda, CA, 1929.
