Questionable practices by criminal lawyers in Sydney? Here’s what I observe.
When somebody first meets with us about their criminal matter, it’s not uncommon for them to have shopped around.
It’s quite common to hear that other criminal lawyers have promised them a specific outcome, like a Section 10, for instance. I tell them I’m not surprised, but go on to tell them why a range of outcomes is all that should be promised.
No criminal lawyer should ever be promising a specific outcome. It’s unfair to the client whose future is going to be affected and it ends up costing them more time and money when they come back to us for an appeal.
Providing false hope is unethical behaviour. How is this genuine advocacy?
