My Birds of the Dominican Republic documentation is available in zine form this Saturday at @phillyzinefest! I drew this after an epic trip to the DR with @ofgrammatology’s family in July where we drive all over the country and saw not only some stunning landscapes but also some funny little birds (including una palomita blanca 🕊️🥲). My mom originally got me hooked on birding years ago and meetups with @phillyqueerbirders and following accounts like @audubonsociety @corvidresearch @wildbirdfund and @birdcollective have only helped that interest to grow. Nice cock! During our recent trip to Colombia Western Andes, the Andean Cock-of-the-rock was a main target, and an unmissable bird experience in our based town of Jardin. Perhaps the most accesible lek of this bird is the Jardin de Rocas reserve where is possible to fin many males at display. The local subespecies correspond to Rupicola peruviana sanguinolentus. We spotted a lot of males in the reserve and females were spotted along a river near the village. 🇨🇴 #colombiabirding #birdingabroad

An American Avocet (Recurvirostra americana) foraging on the edge of a mucky pond. Feeling very grateful to the Stswecem’c Xget’tem First Nation for welcoming us onto their land for a bioblitz this past weekend. It was a great time looking for Arthropods and other cool organisms in a diverse range of habitats with incredible scenery. After two days of bioblitzing it feels like I didn’t even begin to scratch the surface of the biodiversity that occurs on the 64,000 hectare property. Happy to have found some cool bugs and spiders. I even got to see and photograph my first American Avocet. As thanks I donated my blood to the local mosquitoes and biting midges. An I’iwi paused momentarily on a branch while feeding. We were fortunate enough to watch a group of six or seven of these cool birds feeding in the pouring rain. They almost never stopped moving as they worked their way from flower to flower. The I’iwi’s unique decurved bill allows them to feed on the nectar from Hawaiian flowers that are decurved. The Agami Heron ..... does BEAUTIFUL even begin to describe this bird??? This medium sized heron is just spectacular in every way. From it's colorful plumage to their extra long beak this bird has got ~IT~. Three weeks ago I had no idea this bird existed, let alone had hopes to see one. That changed when I arrived in Crooked Tree and was informed that there was a better than not chance that we'd get to see one. I've seen 5!! The magic of birding is that anything can happen when you show up and enjoy the birds, you never know what you might see!! Probably the worst part of my laptop hard drive dying this past fall is that I lost my Lightroom library. I didn’t lose many photos at all, but I lost all of my edits, ratings, picks and tagging. Definitely need to figure out if I can retrieve the library still off of the hard drive. One thing I’ve realized since is how rusty I am at post processing. When I first looked through Collins(THE bird guide) Iberian Magpie were a bird I stopped at and though I need to see someday. Today I saw then up close and personal! They really like slightly salty crisps and one individual we named Barry is a clever bastard and has stayed posh cheese all over the place. I started my first official bird list with eBird this year on January first. I knew we had some traveling to do this summer (Hamilton & Sarnia Ontario; Oahu, Hawai’i, USA; and Montego Bay & Negril, Jamaica) so I set my goal at 200 birds, since we would have so much extra opportunity to see birds that are not local to our area. It felt weird starting my first year with what might be a big year in comparison to years to follow. It may pale in comparison to other seasoned birders, but I don’t much care. Well, that 200 bird threshold has been exceeded (swipe right for expanding area totals.) There are still over 2 months left, including some prime winter months. I don’t plan to leave the province, or even the lower mainland before then, but I do have my hopes set on adding a few specific birds to my list: Snowy Owl Harlequin Duck American Bittern Great Horned Owl Saw-Whet Owl I could go on and on, but these are birds that I know for sure to be in my area. One of the stars of today! At most of the sites we visited today we saw Griffon Vultures, lifting into the air along ridge lines and circling around as conditions were not ideal for migration. The highlight though was visiting a colony site and watching these absolute beasts appear and disappear from out of the clouds as they alternated between sitting on the rocks and cruising around.
