📖 Book Review 📖 Synop 👉🏼 First of all, I loved this. It’s an incredibly bleak collection of stories about people doing the shittiest things, and offers no redemption of any kind… I’m not sure why I loved it but I did. Second of all, this is not for everyone. I promise I don’t say that to sound like an asshole or like I’m gate keeping anything. I genuinely wouldn’t recommend this to anyone who doesn’t regularly read/listen to depraved shit. You’re just not gonna like it. While this isn’t horror, I feel like horror lovers would enjoy it. It’s honestly not NOT horror in its own way. The people & stories may be fiction, but I fear they’re not far from reality in impoverished areas of America. These stories will stay in my brain for a really long time and I’m looking forward to picking up more of Donald Ray Pollock’s work! ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️💫

LE STRADE DEL MALE di Antonio Campos Un film che non mi stanco mai di guardare sia per le sue molte chiavi di lettura che per la sua alta qualità. Scritto da Antonio e Paulo Campos e adattato dal romanzo omonimo di Donald Ray Pollock, il film è una parabola della Fede in tutte le sue sfaccettature, sia positive ma soprattutto negative. È infatti essa il fattore che condiziona la vita di tutti i personaggi e in particolare dei Russell. La storia copre un grosso lasso di tempo che va dal termine del Secondo conflitto mondiale alla Guerra del Vietnam. Quello che salta all’occhio fin da subito è il modo ciclico in cui si ripetono gli eventi, come sei figli fossero destinati a ripetere gli errori e percorrere le stesse orme dei genitori. Seppur la scrittura sia composta da vari episodi che coprono i vari periodi temporali, nella pellicola trova posto un protagonista assoluto: Arvin, interpretato da un Tom Holland che da sfoggio delle sue grandi abilità attoriali. Arvin è una mosca bianca che non crede in nulla, a differenza degli altri protagonisti, ma su cui pesa un insegnamento del padre: reagire alla violenza con la violenza. Oltre a Holland, l’opera è arricchita da un cast di altissimo livello composto da Bill Skarsgard, Haley Bennet, Sebastian Stan, Jason Clarke, Riley Keough e Mia Wasikowska, giusto per citarne qualcuno. In particolare, ho amato i due predicatori interpretati da Harry Melling e da Robert Pattinson. Anche se separati da due periodi storici, entrambi hanno un modo distorto di rivestire il loro ruolo e di vivere la fede, e in particolare Roy, interpretato da Melling, è un personaggio davvero tragico che stimola sia pietà che odio. KNOCKEMSTIFF de #donaldraypollock De este autor me gusta más EL DIABLO A TODAS HORAS pero este fue el primer libro que leí suyo y el que me enganchó a su obra. No es muy extensa y eso me da rabia. Me gustaría secuestrarlo como Misery y obligarle a escribir más y más. Lo mismo haría con Gillian Flynn. 8. MADRES, un ensayo sobre la crueldad y el amor de #jackelinerose Una barbaridad de verdades que no queremos escuchar. Porque hoy en día la verdad es escandalosa. 9. Review of The Devil All the Time by Donald Ray Pollock Rating:2⭐️ I have no idea what this book was trying to say. Its aggressive use of shock value gets tiring very quickly and desensitizes the reader. I guess somewhere in this there is a point made about morality, but the writing just makes it seem like the author is pointing a finger at the people he describes and saying: ”Oh look at all those people committing heinous crimes! I’m not like that! I‘m a law abiding citizen!“. The only thing good I can really say about this is that I think its critical portrayal of church is well done. This was also a book which I soft DNFd earlier in the year and only picked up again because I’m in somewhat of a reading slump and needed the confirmation of finishing a book (not glad I finished it though). 📖 REVIEW 📖 This book is WILD! This is a gripping southern gothic crime novel set post-WW2 and it follows a cast of characters living in southern Ohio and West Virginia. It takes place of several years and features several POVs. The characters are terrible people who do terrible things with a ranging degree of terribleness and they are all COMPELLING. Please read this in a Stefon voice: This novel has everything: disturbing religious rituals, murder, a man who eats spiders, animal sacrifices, prayer logs, serial killers, a crooked sheriff, more murder, even more murder, an abusive preacher, more murder. This book is entertaining, it is disturbing, it is sad, it is violent. The best way I can describe it is if you took the vibe of the first season of True Detective and moved it to Ohio/WV. En esta obra, se desarrollan tres tramas que convergen conforme pasan las páginas. Una pareja de viajeros, una familia de escasos recursos y unos peculiares predicadores religiosos se conocerán en circunstancias llenas de sangre y arrepentimiento. La ambientación es muy buena, logrando que te adentres en los escenarios rurales y de carretera que apropiadamente acompañan la narrativa de la novela. Por su narrativa fluida, representa una buena alternativa para leer en maratón. Es mi primera lectura del autor, y me quedó con ganas de conocer sus otras dos obras: “Knockemstiff” y “El banquete celestial”. Cuenta con una adaptación a película en Netflix que también tiene buenas críticas, seguramente la estaré viendo dentro de poco. Knockemstiff is a town populated by people worn down by their tough life experiences. The short stories in this collection are grimy, rough and pure dynamite. Rating: ⭐⭐⭐⭐ Short Thoughts: So I fell in love with Pollock’s writing when I read The Devil all the Time back in January. The shorts here continue to exhibit his incredible writing. His characters are awful and many of them are truly despicable, but his writing is electric and you can’t help but get swept up in their narratives. The stories themselves are short and offer brief glimpses into their lives. They come hard and fast, hitting you at full speed and leaving you with a delightful unclean feeling. I’m now going to buy another book of his because I need more.

THE DEVIL ALL THE TIME was an instant classic (not bad for a mill worker/truck driver who wrote this debut novel in his fifties), as is Larry McMurtry’s THE LAST PICTURE SHOW, and years from now these others may very well be considered classics right alongside them (if they aren’t already—looking at you, COME CLOSER). I’m still catching up on past reads so it’s time to show some love for Donald Ray Pollack’s THE DEVIL ALL THE TIME. Oh, boy, what a gritty, bleak, disturbing treat this was. Loved many of its complicated characters, Willard being my favorite, his son coming in a close second. The author’s ability to flawlessly weave a story between so many people and places into one interconnected web was astonishing. It is truly a period southern gothic piece with some of the finest writing I’ve experienced. Ce roman choral nous emmène dans les tréfonds d'une Amérique souillée, meurtrie, là où le malheur des uns provoque la décadence des autres. Tous sont animés par l'infime envie de s'en sortir, mais ils pataugent dans la fange et le dégoût d'eux mêmes. Tous ont des profils bien différents, mais tous semblent inévitablement attirés par le fond, comme si la ville elle-même dégageait une atmosphère malsaine et les emprisonnait dans une spirale de vices et d'immondices. Dans cette histoire, pas de héros, ni même de gentils ou de méchants ; aucun moyen pour le lecteur de prendre part à la dichotomie du Bien et du Mal, puisque seule la déchéance de l'humanité semble régner en maître. 5/5 The Devil All the Time is a cruel, oppressive and seedy novel that delights in just how disgustingly messed up it really is. It's one of those books that burrows right through your body, till it reaches your core, and there, it sits, festering, rotting you from the inside out while it infects your blood. This right here is a heavily violent, gruesome and vicious novel - However, it's so much more than gratuitous savagery to shock and disturb. This is a novel with heart, a story with soul. Above everything, this is a tale about the crushing frustration of discovering one's own limitations. It's about the fetid stench of desperation that clings to the lives of these unfortunate characters. Ultimately, it's about the futility of it all. It is utterly, totally devoid of all hope. Yet, somehow, there manages to be such a profound and wonderful beauty to this enigma of a novel, something so entirely grotesque and difficult to describe. The Devil All the Time captures so perfectly a very specific feeling. And, while it's not quite clear what that feeling even is, it's there... With every turn of the page, and it's brutally lonely. The backbone of this entire novel is a bunch of unsavory, awful, horrible characters who constantly make insanely bad life choices. RESEÑA : El Diablo a todas horas - Donald Ray Pollock ⛪😈🇺🇸✝️ Hola mis queridos hominidos, una vez mas Pickles 😼 aqui trayendoles mi experiencia con éste libro al que le traia ganas. Sinopsis: Un padre con PTSD que lleva a su hijo a rezar a un improvisado altar en el bosque, una pareja de asesinos seriales que viajan en carretera y un predicador sociopata junto mas seres humanos delesnables entrelazan sus destinos en esta cruda, violenta y desencarnada historia. Opinión: Para no pecar de emitir un mal juicio acerca de este libro me di a la tarea de investigar un poco sobre el autor y escuchar un par de entrevistas para entender mejor lo que hay detrás de esta violenta historia. Creo yo que hasta cierto punto es un libro morboso, con mucho de lo que ya sabemos de la oscura naturaleza humana y el como la religión puede estar de por medio en actos atroces, sumando el contexto rural estadounidense en que el autor desenvuelve la trama y que el conoce tan bien da como resultado esta historia caótica que bueno... Es mas de lo mismo que sabemos que ocurre en el mundo actual. Sin embargo algo que rescató es esta percepción de que al final, el cielo y el infierno estan aqui en la Tierra y que tarde o temprano las consecuencias de las acciones terminan alcanzandonos a cada uno. Es la primera vez que leo a Donald Ray Pollock y creo que es un sujeto con mucho talento para contar historias turbias, pues si bien creo que el libro es, hasta cierto punto un libro "palomero/morboso", esta contando de una manera muy ágil, es imposible no engancharte con las diferentes tramas y querer seguir leyendo y durante toda la historia hay muchas referencias a eventos pasados en la vida de los protagonistas que estan narrados sin que pierdas el hilo de la situación actual (evidentemente para dar mas contexto). No quiero dar mucho spoiler pero, para finalizar con esta reseña quiero destacar que en el primer capítulo hay cierto evento que me gustó mucho, muy perturbador y muy escalofriante. Todo el contexto detrás de este evento y en lo que culmina fue algo que me impresionó/aterro/gusto demasiado. No es un mal libro pero me hubiera gustado que tuviera un mensaje un poco mas profundo.

I picked up this book after watching the Netflix movie and was surprised how accurate the movie was to the book. I also wanted to read it since I’m from Ohio. It’s definitely a mystery/thriller about the brutal reality of a backwoods Ohio town. It questions what is good and bad, and what religion means to different people, focusing on a young boy named Alvin who sees some of the worst actions of people. It’s pretty grotesque and not sugar-coated, so if you prefer light-hearted reads, maybe this one isn’t for you, but it is a gripping read. #thedevilallthetime #donaldraypollock #bookreview
Acabo de leer "El diablo a todas horas" (2012, Random House 2020), de Donald Ray Pollock. Yo, de este señor lo quiero leer todo desde que descubrí "El banquete celestial". Me impactó mucho esa novela descabellada, irreverente, violenta a más no poder, diferente y atrevida en suma. Iba con prevención ahora. Medía mis expectativas para no darme el batacazo, pero... ¡no hay tal! Pollock no me ha defraudado. Esta novela de excesos, que nos presenta tres líneas argumentales que confluyen finalmente de forma magistral, es casi mejor que "El banquete...", lo cual es mucho decir para mí, fan absoluta de aquella obra. Esta exploración exhaustiva de las profundidades del alma humana no deja indiferente a nadie. Porque la violencia no es gratuita, sino un intento desesperado de conectar con el Ser superior que buscan desesperadamente. Es lo que hacen con sus actos ese padre que compone ofrendas sangrientas para curar el cáncer de su esposa; ese predicador lascivo que busca a dios en las jovencitas; esos asesinos en serie que persiguen la foto perfecta; ese sheriff que se deja comprar por dinero y poder... Toda una fauna de la América profunda, rural, que el autor conoce casi de primera mano, porque creció en ese mismo pueblo y, aunque no fueran ciertos los hechos que nos cuenta, reconoce que muy bien pudieran haber pasado... Sin palabras. Pese a que le falta el grotesco sentido del humor de "El banquete...", es una tremenda novela que les recomiendo... si tienen estómago fuerte. A propósito; hay película del 2020 en Netflix -muy buena por cierto-, con una generación de actores jóvenes que lo dan todo, ¡y una voz en off que va narrando los acontecimientos y resulta ser el mismísimo Pollock!
