Houseki no kuni is genuinely one of the best mangas I've read. I love the story, the characters, the world building, and the drawings so much!! It's over now, and I'm really grateful for being a fan since like the end of 2021. And I love phos and them being one of the characters I deeply relate to (aside from yuji) and I'm so glad the manga ended the way it did especially after what happened with everything before the final chapter. I'm really happy and grateful for ichikawa that they decided to write and draw this manga and take their time on it.. Malý hloupý kamínek. Malý hloupý kamínek, kvůli kterému jsem probrečela tříhodinovou cestu vlakem, kvůli kterému jsem plakala na záchodě na intru, kvůli kterému jsem vzlykala dvacátého pátého čtvrtý v jednu ráno. Kamínek, kvůli kterému budu docela určitě plakat znova. Kamínek, jehož malinký úlomek se nedá sehnat za méně než deset tisíc, takže mám smůlu. Ve stejný den, kdy pro mě skončilo studium na umělce, nepočítám-li teda tu okolnost, že ještě musim odmaturovat, skončil, nebo vlastně možná začal, taky příběh lesknoucí se země. A v tu ránu se mi po těch letech studia konečně upřímně zachtělo něco nakreslit, ačkoli jde teda jen o malý hloupý kamínek. Ale myslím si, že vzhledem ke kontextu onoho příběhu je to naprosto adekvátní. Phos má konečně klid a já skoro taky. Land of the Lustrous by Haruko Ichikawa has reached its conclusion and alongside the feeling of melancholy that comes with the end of a story I've followed for almost 3 years is the joy of knowing that in the end Phos is at peace finally. I first got into it through the anime and instantly fell in love with the odd character of Phos, a mineral lifeform who never found a place amongst their peers because of their lesser physical and mental abilities. But Phos had spirit and a drive like no-one else, resulting in an ever expanding story led by an ever changing lead who would literally transform with their current circumstances, visually signifying their development in a way no other character could. Ichikawa crafted one of the most imaginative worlds in fiction and backed it up with a unreal artstyle that is unlike anything in the medium, second to none in her mastery of black and white, second only to Kentaro Miura in my overall personal preferences, which I guess makes her the greatest living illustrator in my personal experience. Of course her visual storytelling is only half of the ahem story and her writing abilities is no slouch, the mysteries of this alien feeling world and the journey of Phos unravelling them was enrapturing, culminating in a grand feeling finale before… going on an indefinite hiatus that lasted for 2 years. In that time I discovered it and became a fan myself and while I was content with the ending we got then, the news of its return made me ecstatic. Releasing irregularly these past 2 years the final arc has been enjoyable but I understandably lost the plot so before I read the ending I did my due diligence and reread this material. It was the right choice, to put it lightly. The final act of Land of the Lustrous is definitely the most out there this story has been but its also the most sentimental, given all the suffering Phos has gone through I absolutely love what this arc brings. It begins with them awaking and taking on the form of a pure, angelic being, without any physical emotiveness and before you can snap your fingers every single character aside from them is gone, prayed into blissful nothingness.
Land of the lustrous/Houseki no kuni ended yesterday. This manga means so much to me because it helped me through a difficult period in my life, and as cheesy as it sounds it was a great help for my mental state. I love it so much to the point where I even stole a characters name. The character specifically is phosphophyllite, the main character, whom I also kin.
