Ghats in Varanasi are riverfront steps leading to the banks of the Ganges river. The city has 84 ghats. Most of the ghats are bathing and puja ceremonial ghats, while two ghats, Manikarnika and Harishchandra, are used exclusively as cremation sites. #varanasi #varanasidiaries #varanasiindia #Ghat #Ghats #Ganga #gangaaarti #aarti #Puja #manikarnika #manikarnikaghat #India #burningghat #burningghatsofvaranasi

#burningghatsofvaranasi Yesterday a Brahman explained the rituals for guidance of dead bodies🙏🏻🔥 At home, family members say good bye to the died person and prepare the body with a massage of 7 different oils according to the chakras. After, the body will be wrapped within 6 mtr cotton; 4 family members will bring the body (max. 25 h after dying) to the burning place, buy wood, one has to shave his hair, they take fire from the 3500 years old fire, which you can see in one pic, to light up the own cremation fire and move 5 rounds (according to the elements) around the fire to respect the universe. Women of the family are not allowed to accompany because of their feelings…. Nobody is crying there…..! The body needs 3 h to become ash - but not completely: the chest of men and the hip (main and most important parts) of women will be given to mother Ganga to get moksha 🙏🏻🕉️ 6 sorts of dead people will not be burned: Childs, pregnant women, animals, beaten by cobra, sadhus, Lepra ill persons. #endoflife #mokshavaranasi #ritualsafterdeath #varanasidiaries #ritualsofdeath #ritualsofdeathandrebirth #kashivishwanath #respectdeath #lifeanddeath #holyvaranasi #moksha #waytoheaven

Day ? in India (I have now lost count). We have just spent an incredible four days in Varanasi. It is just as an amazing place as I remember it when I last visited in 1989. It is one of the Holiest places in Hinduism and the spiritual home of Hinduism in India. People from all over India come to Varanasi to bath in the Holy Ganga and also to perform furneral rights for the departed. This includes cremations on the ‘burning’ Ghats. No photograph of that in this set though as photos are not allowed at the burning ghats (although plenty of people seemed to be doing so with iPhones!). The whole of India is crowded so photography wise it can be difficult to isolate a subject as there is so much going on in the streets and alleys. This set of images are mostly some of the ‘single’ subject pictures I did manage to get. Almost all of these would not have been possible without the immense talent of Manoj Yadav (@manoj_photography_fixer_guide ). His knowledge of Varanasi’s alleys and lanes. Where to go, when and how are amazing. His eye for a photo op is amazing. Two days in his company and we saw and did things we would have never ever have found or done on our own. He’s worked with the likes of the BBC, National Geographic and Steve McCurry. And, maybe slightly dispiritingly, for Manoj…. Me 🤣🤣🤣 Thank you Manoj. You are a legend! Sorry the photo of you in picture 10 maybe isn’t as flattering as you might want but that’s because you weren’t directing me! 🤣🤣🤣 Pics 8 & 9 are of families carrying the deceased family members to the burning ghats for cremation. #india #indiaphotography #indianphotography #documentaryphotography #documentary #colourphotography #leicaq2 #leicaphotography #leicacamera #leicaimages #leica #visitindia #portrait #portraitphotography #portraiture #leicaindia #varanasi #varanasiphotography #hindu #sadhu #varanasighats #burningghat #burningghatsofvaranasi

Kashi - The cradle of civilisation. The oldest, continuously inhabited city in the world. Not only was Kashi continuously inhabited for thousands of years, it was also the most powerful magnet that drew people from far and wide. AMAZING INDIA 🧡💛🤎 Is there somewhere in the world that you feel drawn to? That you feel connected to in some way. At home. At peace. Energised and inspired by? India does that for me. My first trip to India was in 1991 with my bestie @katiegrassby . We were backpacking for a year and ended out amazing adventure in India. I’ve since then been drawn back again and again through my work for @frenchconnection , @accessorize , @radleylondon and travelled the length and breadth of the country. I will never tire of this amazing country and really hope to be able to visit again in the not too distant future. Varanasi is a place where death is celebrated. People come here from afar to leave their mortal coil or to cremate their loved ones. There are two ghats where bodies are cremated, the Harishchandra and the Manikarnika ghats. One can hear the chants, Ram naam satya hai !! Meaning the only truth is God's name while everything else is just temporary. #WalkingBackTowardTheHimalaya Trigger - Death, Burning Ghats A lot of the subjects I deal with aren't always sunshine & roses. I had tons of travel images from #Varanasi - regular *picture-perfect postcards, that Insta audiences apparently can't stop gaping at. Do allow me for a change, to bring to you visuals of departing souls off of the Ganga. After years of living under the influence of the Himalayan region & the people, I was called out to the banks of a river flowing right out of the Himalayan peaks. Back #onassignment with @natgeo at the #Ganges. To a river that's believed to atone you of all your sins & perils. #PaulSalopek, my friend, my Editor, revered world walker, two-time Pulitzer award winning former war journalist, et al; has been walking around Earth for almost a decade now. This time around, he walked up to the burning Ghats of Benaras with me. Now don't get me wrong. It's not that I'm necessarily drawn to conflict, pain or suffering. I have always considered myself an escapist - a term all travellers relate to. The moment things get slightly unwary - I'd be the first to run far away - especially from something as intense as death. I guess this time I didn't have a choice. I *had* to confront my own misgivings, about the idea of mortality. One of the things that have stayed with me from #WalkingBackTowardTheHimalaya with Paul, has been our documentation of Death. Daily, hundreds of people around India (or the world) bring the bodies, or the ashes of their loved ones that have passed, to the Ghats of the Ganges. In the hope, & in the deep-rooted belief, that *this* is the one place, that will bring their departed ones (& perhaps their own) souls to rest. To liberation. To Moksha. Nirvana. Although, if I may ask, what is Moksha or Nirvana? Is Nirvana, in fact, a much celebrated delusion? Can your soul truly be liberated from a river flowing through the #Himalaya? I'm not sure if I am looking for 'beauty' in death. Is it beautiful, to watch death come alive before you? At such a powerful & potent site that promises divinity in afterlife? I'll leave that to you... with scenes from the #Ganga on that cold wintry day in Benaras.
