Sharing a few weekend updates. Hoping everyone is well! We haven’t shared any info yet, but we have a few more handmade ceramic lamps available, made using some beautiful and characterful Japanese and Korean antique pots with Belgian linen shades. We have just sold some to those waiting since the last time we made some and we have a few more - large (50cm shades), medium (40cm shades) and small (30cm shades). Some glazed, some matte - and very ‘wabi’, shall we say. Please let us know if you’d like some more info and photos. Some lamps will be reserved for the next Stepney Townhouse pop-up shop which will happen in late June. Back home in Paris, where spring is desperately trying to break through but failing miserably. We seem to be getting sporadic bursts of sunshine, then crazy winds and scattered showers—ah, well—moody is good too. I love this little number in Stepney Green with one of my favorite interior combos - worn cognac leather, soft velvet, and old wood. The ceiling fresco doesn’t hurt either, and then they throw in those Tannoy speakers - damn. Here, this early Georgian hallway is panelled from end to end, which makes it incredibly practical for daily use, and it’s easy to touch up if it does take a knock. Another beautiful store, and it’s always lovely visiting Tetbury. In the little pile of books, there’s a recent discovery, and a very sweet book called The Life & Times of Mr Pussy, by the Gentle Author (do check out @thegentleauthor for all things Spitalfields) and also a beautiful book about Japanese Houses from @taschen . All very good for the soul in these cold days.
Kitchen: January 2024. It feels like it was installed yesterday! It’s coming up to two years since we worked with @devolkitchens to create this lovely space. It’s a joy to use every day, and was certainly a non-stop hub of activity through the festive season! Thanks to @hapdesigns and @devolpaul for the enjoyable experience creating it. Also, we have some wonderful dried flowers from @theflowerplant - very fitting with the colours and natural materials of the kitchen.
First Sunday of 2024. Wishing everyone a very belated Happy New Year. It has been a rather busy week at Stepney Townhouse but now all is calm and collected. This is the most loved view of last year and it’s wonderful to see it again with some soft daylight poking through after a very crazy week of rain. Hope everyone has survived that and you’re feeling good about the year ahead. We’ve only made a few small changes in this room - in our last post we added a beautiful old table at the other side of the room. We’ve been swapping furniture around to suit, and have sourced a few beautiful bits of pottery, too. We have some exiting projects and collaborations ahead. Last year we hosted many inspiring shoots, and it’s great to see the wonderful captures coming through. It was also a year of the first Considered Things Shop here at the house, and also a year where designed and created our own pieces. More to follow this year with all of the above, and looking forward to meeting with more of you in person as these things happen. Wishing everyone a restful day and a good start to the new year!

It’s our first full Christmas at home in London and throughout the last few days we’ve been visiting our favourite places in Stepney, Spitalfields, Clerkenwell, Soho, Marylebone, and Bloomsbury… following from a short trip to Bath last week which was stunning as always. It’s wonderful being home. Today, we cycled to Greenwich, had a spontaneous pre-lunch stout at noon, and returned home for a feast with lots of candles, wine, and music. Comfort. Year on year, a focus on comfort, real materials, and simplicity has been ever more important. Also, objects and finishes that are time worn, or things that get better with age, are just good for the soul. On top of the old Welsh blankets, we added this beautiful throw by @nikijoneshome . Perhaps indulgent, it would be lovely to have them all around the house! The huge travertine tables are a solid bedside companion, and the lamps are a Considered Things design, made from antique pots and linen shades. Steps at Stepney Townhouse. In typical townhouse fashion, there are quite a few stairs here, so the stairwell and hallways become as important as the main rooms of the house. We unified the panelling and flooring to read as one room that connects all the spaces throughout the house. Travelling up and down the house always feels like an experience as you get glimpses into rooms and windows at each end of the house. The little window in the first image is a personal favourite, giving you a little view to the garden. I love how the panelling and stairs thoughtfully line up with the window. Nice work from Architect John Ireland back in 1717. Also, can you spot the lovely antique thermometer? We found this at @a_g_hendy_co_homestore - a daily pleasure to use!

Sunshine on things. It has been a lovely week for glimpses of autumn sunlight throughout the darker, rainy days. Stepney Townhouse has been hosting some lovely people again this week, working their magic with the cameras and catching the light as it changes through the day. Now for a slow weekend. On the theme of light and materials, I will be indulging in a beautiful and thoughtful book by @axelvervoordt - Wabi Inspirations. It’s not a new title (published 2010), I have only just bought a copy after being introduced to it when staying at @silent__living earlier this year. It’s so good. Wishing you a slow Saturday.

Sunshine, seating, and sounds. This is the traditional drawing room of Stepney Townhouse. It was named the Music Room by the previous owner, which stuck with us. It’s situated on the first floor, with views into the trees and across the street. It’s south facing, so we have lots of dappled light - especially in Autumn and Spring. The panelling is painted in @farrowandball Old White / Dead Flat, which picks up the greens of the trees, ceiling and furniture. The sofa is one of our favourite pieces - it’s from @scpltd - we’ve had lots of questions about this one! The low chairs, for us, are an all-time classic, and indeed very comfortable. They’re a mid century Danish design by Poul Kjaerholm, made by @fritzhansen . We’ve had them for years and they get better with age. We’re currently on the hunt for a long, low bookcase to sit behind these chairs and take a lamp on top. If anyone sees anything, please let me know! A day of rest. It has been a busy few weeks here at Stepney Townhouse - A few shoots, a pop-up shop, some new pieces, and some decorating and repairs. Thank you to everyone who came to our first pop up - it was a brilliant day. And great to meet all the talented people who have been shooting here lately, looking forward to seeing the content as it is published. Reception room. This is the first view from the hallway as you enter Stepney Townhouse. It’s a south facing room with large trees outside, filtering the sun. It’s a lovely space to receive guests and spend time in. This Saturday we will be hosting our first ever Considered Things pop-up shop in this double reception room, including the rear half with the large table and bookcase. We will have antique and modern pottery, paintings, lamps, mirrors, furniture, textiles, and a few decorative objects. All time slots are now booked and there’s a small waiting list. Home comforts. It has been a bit of a hibernation week at Stepney Townhouse this week with the rainy weather and the nights drawing in. Lights dimmed. Candles lit. Cushions plumped! We’ve been having quite a few location shoots recently, and there are a few more to come, so any quiet days and evenings have been savoured! It‘a always lovely seeing the beautiful shots and films by the talented people who come to Stepney Townhouse to work together. Next Saturday (28th) is our Considered Things pop up shop - all the slots have been booked so thank you to everyone for booking in, and also to those that have been in touch. Some Sunday sun and a couple of ercols. “ercol was established in 1920 by Italian designer Lucian R Ercolani in High Wycombe, the centre of English furniture making. He was intent on designing and producing relevant and honest furniture, design and people were the cornerstones of his company from the very beginning” I love their simplicity and practicality yet having a sense of optimism and humanity. We enjoy these pieces every day, and they regularly land in different places around the house. Whilst being a modern design, their references to classic Windsor furniture mean they lend themselves to this historic home rather well. Sending rays of sunshine. Happy Sunday!

Happy Friday! It’s feeling rather autumnal today. Apparently we’re due a dazzling display of autumn colours due to the wet weather in late summer. This palette feels particularly autumnal here, and a cosy spot for some weekend lounging. This weekend I’m going to be photographing some items for sale, aiming for the Considered Things pop up shop here at Stepney Townhouse to be on Saturday 28th October, so if you’re keen to visit, save the date and let me know. A bit of still life. There’s no theme here, just a bunch of things, wildly different in use, era, and material. They have come from all over the world (from some very remote parts) and somehow exist together in East London. It’s fascinating, our relationship with objects and art, isn’t it? Is it about stories? Human connection? Or perhaps something else?

For anyone on the kitchen renovation journey - the wall cupboards are from the deVOL Shaker Range and the large prep table from their Classic Range as it is made in a bespoke size and style. The walls re painted in @farrowandball Old White, Dead Flat and the cupboards are painted in a lovely earthy green mixed by deVOL. On the right is our old baker’s rack with all our pottery that we use daily. The swan wall lights are by @originalbtc
Bits and bobs that I’ve collected over the years, displayed in the alcove in our sitting room. My vintage glasses jostle with other curiosities and treasures, including two wren’s nests that I’ve found over the years. The eagle-eyed amongst you might spot a 35-yr-old Emma Bridgewater mug - it now has a crack but I can’t bear to throw it away. The gorgeous Buddha on the wall is by my cousin @katelowepainter who gave it to us when we got married. 💞 Also papped: A rare moment of cleaning 😅 Our little Georgian cottage attracts dust like nobody’s business but bearing in mind you need to dust again about 3 hours later, I try to do it as little as possible. 🤭 Thanks to Fraser getting a shot of me climbing into the alcove - it’s an extreme sport!
