NEW RECIPE 🧑🏽‍🍳 Chocolate and Walnut Banana Bread 🍫🍌 Made without refined sugar or refined fat! I love creating delicious cakes and treats that you’d NEVER guess are much healthier for you. Yes, I sometimes eat the unhealthy versions of cakes and doughnuts (it’s of course just occasional, but non-restriction is important 🥰). We need to come out of this thinking that a sweet treat or cake HAS to be horribly unhealthy. What if we could have a cake that’s made with mostly wholefoods or minimally processed foods? While also tasting great! I am not saying eat the whole tin. This is still to be enjoyed as a treat. Make the batch then stick a load in the freezer, and get one out every now and then. Life is for enjoying 🤩 Why is this Chocolate and Walnut Banana Bread so great: 🍰 it’s pretty much free of refined fats, and focuses on fat from whole sources. I.e. peanut butter. You can use any nut butter or seed butter, such as tahini. 🍰 it uses dates instead of refined sugar. Dates are a wholefood, and a great, healthy replacement for sugar. They’re full of fibre and nutrients 🍰 it’s full of walnuts, which are a good source of fibre and omega-3s. 🍰 it’s chocolatey! Go for a high cocoa-content vegan dark chocolate to keep it healthier. If you go for 100% cocoa chocolate or cacao nibs, it’s even healthier 🍰 it’s easy to make 🍰 it’s plant based, dairy-free and egg-free and even oil-free. It helps keep you away from treats that are inflammatory, increase risk of disease and make it harder to maintain a healthy weight. Enjoying a biscuit with your cuppa? Be aware that just ONE biscuit can take you close to your NHS recommended daily sugar limit (30g daily for adults, much less for children). A study published in the @the_bmj_ found that almost ALL cakes and biscuits sold in the UK contain more than 22.5g of sugar per 100g. This means that just ONE biscuit or slice of cake can be our entire day’s recommended sugar limit… Just the one!! (depending on size/weight of biscuit, slice of cake etc). This one, made by @walkersshortbreadpeople is even higher, at 25.2g per 100g. Interesting it is called Oat and Golden Syrup biscuit. A more accurate description might be Sugar and Golden Syrup biscuit (but then, Golden Syrup is liquid sugar, so that would make it a Sugar and Sugar biscuit…). Sugar is not only linked to being overweight and obesity, but also increases inflammation in the body, causes the glycation of skin cells (ageing the skin) and even feeds cancer cells (do listen to the brilliant Sheila Dillon talking on my recent podcast about the strong link between food and cancer).
