Probiotics and prebiotics are getting so much attention these days, but all of the info overload can be confusing. Let’s set it straight. Probiotics are needed to keep the integrity of your GI tract healthy. They belong in the large intestine. The balance is what is key, it’s less about “good” vs “bad” and more about diversity. This is key for managing things like infections and Candida. Probiotics primarily come from fermented foods like sauerkraut and kimchi. If you need a supplement, look for a spore based brand, which protects the probiotics through the stomach acid and small intestine. Probiotics dictate our cravings, our mood, and even our personality. I see a lot of kiddos riddled with Candida overgrowth who literally have a personality shift when we get that balanced. Just taking probiotics isn’t enough to keep your microbial balance in tact, you have to feed them. Vegetables are out best bet for feeding our microbes and keeping the helpful guys strong. (SIBO or Small Intestinal Bacterial Overgrowth. SIBO is a condition where the bacteria which normally lives in your large intestine overgrow into the small intestine. SIBO can slow the transit time of food and stool through the intestines, causing bacteria to feed on undigested food which causes fermentation and gas, leading to bloating after eating certain foods. 2. Dysbiosis: When dysbiosis is present, it can lead gaps (or permeability) in the intestinal walls (Leaky Gut), allowing for larger particles, bacteria, and toxins to leak into the bloodstream. This process can lead to inflammation, swelling, bloat, and potential autoimmune conditions. 3. Digestive Enzyme Insufficiency: low production of digestive enzymes, like amylase, protease, and lipase, can lead to undigested food hanging out in the small intestines. Food sitting in the small intestines attract bacteria which can produce gasses like methane and hydrogen, causing bloat. 4. Food sensitivities.
