I got a really fun box of @aurifilthread from @lovelyjubblyfabrics during her #FabruaryAtLJF event this year! I knew I wanted to do a strip-y quilt, but changed my mind from an #AdventurelandQuilt to an #InterwovenQuilt so that I could use the scrab bag strips more economically! The strips straight out of the scrap bag were just shy of 5" so I couldn't get the 2.5" strips needed for the Adventureland quilt, but I could get 3 - 1.5" strips that I would need for Interwoven! I am camping at Pensacola Beach, Fl. I plan to do some beach/camp/sewing. And I was reminded of the best beach sewing I ever did… with @bethhawkins when last summer we were “stuck in quarantine” at her condo in Hawaii @poipuhawaii . Unable to Air bnb her place during Covid, we decided to go to Kauai for three weeks and had to spend 14 of those days in quarantine. We could not leave… not even to go to the grocery store…we hired a college kid to stock our fridge and occasionally deliver a fresh Diet Coke frosty beverage. We had a pool just feet away and the ocean out our back door but could not even dip a toe in either! The Hawaii National Guard said they would stop by to make sure we stayed in the condo (which they did) and there was a possible $5000 fine if we weren’t home. And so we sewed. We each traveled to Hawaii with 50 pounds of fabric. we went through 15 or so rotary cutting blades and put on a lot of miles on our featherweight sewing machines. We had a blast making 13 quilts. On our last day of quarantine there were threats of a hurricane. We ran to the store to stock up on food and water and bought plywood to put on the windows. It was the best time ever! The storm passed by and missed the island at the last minute and we were safe. It was on this trip we started thinking about starting @hellocottons. Another backing completed using left over pieces of fabric, 2 heart blocks and scrappy borders which didn’t make it on the front. The main fabric has the teeniest of princesses on it. Anyone else have a shameful pile of wips 😅 my goal will be to finally complete these quilts this yr 💪🏻💯 I honestly froze at the thought of doing all that sashing for those long rows. Then, just a row away from completing a throw, I modified this wonderful free pattern to a queen size quilt. Bc yes, that'd make my life easier, right?! I realized we're in serious need of bed quilts to spruce up the place. This will take a while to attach those thin sashing strips correctly + to finish making more quilt blocks. Pictured isn't even half of the rows. As you can see, this quilt top is a wonderful scrap buster! Who doesn't like a scrappy quilt? And take a look at the back seams 😍 it's easy to get flat seams with @aurifilthread 50wt. I promise the front is just as pretty! I'll share my scraps organization tips in my blog soon. Quilt backings - not a subject talked about often here on Instagram. I found the striped princess crown fabric from @davidtextilesinc at my local quilt shop but they only had 3.75 yards. I decided to incorporate a panel @camelot_fabrics (needed to add the yellow and pink and yellow borders for necessary width). It was a bit tricky lining up the stripes, especially with the label sewn into the back. The last picture shows how much extra striped fabric I had left. Took 3 days to plan and sew this together (yes, I am slow). Finished at 94” by 85” so it was difficult to photograph this well. Here is my progress for Enchanted Garden - February UFO. No, I have not finished the top 🙄 as predicted at the beginning of the month. However, I finished applique on 2 more blocks and pieced and placed applique on 3 more.😜 Applique is what takes quite a bit of time and energy on these blocks and that's why I stalled on it in the first place. The background is black and it's best to work on these in the daylight (which for now means only weekends for me), so that eyes don't get that tired and still it takes quite a bit out of me. What machine do you sew on? This is actually the machine I learned to sew on when I was about 6! My mom upgraded her machine a few years ago so I took this one back home with me from Texas to Scotland as my carry-on. It's such a powerhouse of a machine, but I wish it had a little more throat space for quilting. I've managed some pretty large throws on it though! I've loved the #looperquilt from the first time I saw it! It's such a clever pattern being modular, sorta a choose your own adventure quilt! This was going to be for a kid our friends were trying to adopt, but it fell through so I think I'm going to keep it. Its just such a happy warm quilt I feel like it would brighten up my life which is definitely needed! (It also has a glow-in-the-dark star minky backing and is sooooo soft! You can see it in the second photo!) I finished the backs to the two gift quilts this week! Since it’s the back, I’ll be daring and post these in color before gifting 😉. Plus, my newly hatched Instagram feed is looking a little drab in black and white. Each quilt has a quilt label representing the 2020 year of staying home. I have fabric pens to personalize them, but I’m not sure they will write fine enough. Any recommendations? Yesterday was too depressing for me to post anything about quilting. Here’s one good thing that came out of quarantine: I taught my mom how to make her first quilt via WhatsApp video calls. I used @fatquartershop ´s Ultimate Beginner Quilt patterns and we made one block a week. My mom is already an expert sewist, so it was no surprise that she mastered her points (or redid them because she wasn’t satisfied). My sister @pascalemthomas12 even joined in from Tunisia! So, across time zones and thousands of miles, sometimes having the most difficulties just mastering technological issues, we shared this beautiful and time honored experience. #fatquartershop #caliquiltco #laqca #modernquilting #quiltinginquarantine
Since Meadowland has been gifted for Christmas to one of my dear friends, I can now share it. It's hard to believe but I did finish a quilt larger than a mini from A to Z last year! Have you ever had this type of feeling? But my friend was so excited 🥰 about the colors and the quilting (I have to admit the panto worked great and the thread color jived), so I felt like this quilt was meant for her and that she will cherish it and give it a great home. I finally put the binding on it a couple of days before Christmas. I washed it and it didn't bleed! I was so happy when I took it out of the washing machine 😊 I've had a couple of quilts bleed even with color catchers, so I was crossing my fingers this one wouldn't and my wish came true! Another year and another Running Doe Top-A-Long! Here is my fabric pull from Luv Ya - January pattern. I drew inspiration from a version @morristextiles had as a kit. Only I am using #libertyfabric for my hearts. I was lazy this month and decided not to recalc for my fat eights from a monthly club that @pinkcastlefabrics used to have, so I am going to have 18 different hearts 🥰 You should have seen my grinning face at Quiltcon last year when @jyllybean and I found this just released then pattern by @runningdoequilts at one of the vendors (I can't remember whose booth it was). At first, they said that I couldn't purchase it because it was intended for their partners or something like that. But then one of the ladies mentioned that it was ok to sell it ☺️ I kind of guessed already at that time with hints from Catherine that she was planning on doing something seasonal, so I knew this one was coming up. I have a lot of quilting UFOs. Some of them just from last year, some are much older. I already intended to work on my pile this year and @jyllybean 🥰 added some needed inspiration today to join @allpeoplequilt ufo challenge for 2021. I'll be honest, I did cheat for this month since I had already started working on this UFO last week and since I did know the number of the project for this month, that's where I put it 😂 This is my Looney Tunes Color Brick (free tutorial by Rachel @stitchedincolor on her blog) that I secretly made as a birthday present for my hubby in 2019. Well, I made the top 🙄 aaaaand that's where it stayed until today. All because I had grand plans for the back (this is the first elaborate back I am making!) - scroll to see it in progress today. Well, I will also say that I am currently upstairs at my longarm quilting it (yes, it's almost midnight, but hey we stayed till 3 am for NYE🎄). Here's my #brushstrokesquilt for December #minimasterpiecesqal this is my first attempt at improv and it turned out ok for the first time, but much shorter than Alycr's in the book. I guess I got way into my curves 😂 So I cut off from both sides to make more of a rectangular than square. This was challenging - cutting free hand and not with a ruler. Can't say it's my favorite, but I was very happy for the challenge! Here are all of my 5 quilt tops completed for the Running Doe Fall Top-A-Long. Catherine's patterns fit on a postcard, easy to follow and make which is often a key for me with a busy schedule of a full time job and a bunch of other things I like to do besides quilting. And while we are all still quarantining, the community of rdqtopalongers kept me going this year! I've found a bunch of quilty friends both here on IG and in real life. My #babygoosequilt for December #rdqtopalong is complete! And it's another cat themed one 😻😻😻 I didn't know how I would use this cat print when I bought fabric but I fell in love with it, so I just stashed and here was the perfect opportunity for it. This is the fastest quilt top ever. I cut the fabric on Saturday, put my HSTs together on Sunday (didn't have much time to sew that day) and then on Monday night I finished it after work. Love shack quilt dangling in the afternoon light...this quilt top was a large scale labor of love in 2020. It is a combination of the improv patchwork that I began in Sherri Lynn Wood’s “Bias Strip Daisy” workshop and finished after I completed her improv wedges workshop. These two styles I feel are a good blend and visually feed into one another nicely. The wedges really helped me to complete the puzzle. This is all pieced with just a few things that are appliquéd including the flower center and leaf. Still in Halloween mode. This one is from a variety of fabric makers. The center panel is from Wilmington called “Monster Masquerade “. I didn’t have a pattern but kept adding borders. Thought the trick or treaters needed some paper-pieced candy corn too. The borders are from Moda, Andover, Wilmington, and the neon green from P B textiles. This one is very very bright and colorful. Row by row. I just want to zoom through piecing and get to the hand-quilting part! But, that’s what I usually do, and I’m usually frustrated with the result. “Allow the time that it takes.” In this and in everything (thanks, @expeditionpress).
Taking my time with light and angles and finding I enjoy having several types of projects going at once. It’s not that I get bored—it’s more like an exercise routine: I can change between them as my shoulders or hands get sore or as I need movement or quiet, sawdust or stitching.
Putting the pieces together. Having mostly played it safe with “squares only” quilts in the past, the one I’m working on now is entirely triangles. It seems the secret to success with triangles is to trim the resulting square to a true square again. I’m finding that the precision I learned in woodworking is feeding back into quilting, which I guess explains how my Starrett combo square ended up on the sewing table 😬
More blocks on the bed. This is made from scraps from the #regentstreetlawn I bought to make masks and a French General silky woven. I don’t have what I need to finish a quilt top, but I can get pretty close. #quiltinginquarantine #pinspotsquarantinequilt
Spooky Blooms quilt is done and off to be quilted. The pattern is by Heidi Pridemore @whimsicalworkshop , although I made each block slightly larger than hers. Quilt finished at 68.5” square. I pieced the backing since I didn’t have enough of the purple fabric by Moda from their Hocus Pocus line. Fabulous quilt label is by Kenna @kennasquilts . Here are my gift blocks for week 3 of #christmascheerqal 🎄🎄🎄 I am not in love with the 4th one as my choice of fabric for the top part was a fail and I will most likely redo that one a bit later in the game. It looked great in theory, but didn't turn out quite the way I wanted it. But for now, this is what I have. I didn't have time at all this week to redo anything as it is one of the busiest weeks in year at work. I'll be honest, I am surprised I got these done at all! 😂 Plus, I feel like if I do it later in the game, I'll have a better idea of how my color/fabric is playing out.💙🤍💜 I love the scrappy approach for this quilt, but cutting many different fabrics for a number of blocks at once does get tiresome - much harder to streamline. So I had time to make these wonderful FPP stars! Corinne @corinne.sovey also asked to share a favorite holiday treat. Mine for the last couple of years has been peppermint bark chocolate 🍫. This is not something I grew up eating and I am usually not a huge peppermint fan, but I fell in love with it when a colleague got it for me as a gift. Friday’s have been pretty depressing for me these last few months as I have time to reflect on how hard it is to teach college mathematics online. However, this arrived today from the quilter (Thanks Chelsea @cuddleupquilts ) and I am over the moon happy with this quilt. Happy October! It is so hard to show the quilting details on black, but she has accentuated the design so well. I made the sides super long so they hang way over the side of the queen size bed. This one I am going to keep! So excited!
