Serap Erdinç from Anne Çocuk Eğitim Vakfı (AÇEV) brings a story book from AÇEV's library. Written and illustrated by Yeşim Paktin, "Kendini Arayan Ornitorenk" is ideal for children ages 3+ and tells the story of a platypus working to understand who they are. Reading in the early years profoundly influences literacy and language development, yet children from disadvantaged backgrounds in Turkey lack access to books, school materials, and support. 71% of children aged 0- 5 in Turkey have fewer books. Studies have shown that children in higher socioeconomic families hear 45M words by the age of 4, whereas children from lower socioeconomic families hear only 13M. This gap of 32M can directly affect children's development, literacy, and cognitive skills.
