Right spelling of alternating vowels и/е, а/о, им/а(я), ин/а(я) depends on different reasons. Today we consider the first one.
There are roots which spelling depends on the suffix after it:
In the roots with alternating е/и (бер/бир, пер/пир, мер/мир, дер/дир, тер/тир, блест/блист, жег/жиг, стел/стил, чет/чит) we write "и" if the root is followed by suffix -а. In other cases we write "е" in the root.
Блистать - блестеть
Замирать - замереть
Расстилать - расстелить
Сжигать - сжечь
Сдирать - сдернуть
Отпирать - отпереть
и т.д.
Exceptions: чета, сочетать, сочетание.
The same rule is for alternating "ин" and "им": Начинать - начать
Сжимать - сжать
Сминать - смять.
In the roots кас/кос, лаг/лож "а" is written if the root is followed by suffix -а:
Касаться - коснуться
Предлагать - предложить
