[21.7.2019]
⚪
"As Above, So Below" is a 2014 horror movie directed by John Erick Dowdle starring Perdita Weeks and Ben Feldman. It is probably one of those many movies that were received so negatively, because the people expected it to be like "The Blair Witch Project". In my opinion, the fact that it is indeed a found footage style movie doesn't automatically make it TBWP. The whole concept of this movie was totally misunderstood. It had great and even likable characters that came alive by good acting. Of course it had the jump scares and horror moments, but I think that's not what this film wanted to show us in the first place. I think this movie is about the philosophy that is mentioned in the title as well as in the scenes. Of course, I'm no philosopher and had to look things up myself, but it made my realize and appreciate the brilliance of this movie. Seriously, look it up in the Imdb trivia section. This is not a generic found footage movie. It so much more. It's a metaphorical journey into the circles of hell and the depths of the human nature with all its sins and flaws. Has anyone even noticed the similarities to the story of Dante and Vergil and their descent to hell? It's simply gorgeous how this movie connects so many aspects. People complained about the movie having no real climax. That's exactly the premise of the whole thing! It starts like it endw, as above, so below. In conclusion, this is a highly underrated gem that you should see from another point of view. This not your average FF movie, this is something truly special, if you can fully embrace it.
⚪
ER: 7/10
FR: 7/10
CR: 8/10
⚪
