Automotive MVP: Dieter Zetsche
[Reading Time: 1 minute 40 seconds]
#SFAutomotive

Here we are at the second chapter of the Automotive MVP and today we’ll take a deeper look into the life of the most influencing personality in the premium segment: Dieter Zetsche.
Born in #Istanbul while his father was working as a civil engineer there, Zetsche grew up in #Germany and graduated in electrical engineering first, then completed his doctorate in engineering at the University of Paderborn while working in the research division of Daimler-Benz. His rise inside the #company was quite fast, and every position occupied by the German engineer didn’t last long. From 2000 to 2005 Zetsche moved to #Detroit, where he had the hard work of running Daimler-Chrysler which was struggling in the relaunch of the American brand’s sales. After being made Chairman of the Board in 2006, he was the mind behind the demerger from #Chrysler in 2007.
Financially speaking, the history of “Dr. Z.” in #Daimler AG was more like a rollercoaster. From the very low of the Zetsche-era in 2009, with the shares that were worth only €19, to its very top at a value of €95 per share. After the publication of Daimler’s results for 2018, the shares dropped at nearly €52.
The announcement of his retirement as #CEO of the group made it quickly to the #headlines, setting a crucial generational change and the end of an era of successes for Daimler. Zetsche leaves a company struggling in the development and adaptation of its vehicles toward the electric revolution.
Admired all over the #world, Dr. Z.’s resignation put the word “end” over a wonderful history of success, positive rivalry with many other brands and the confirmation of #MercedesBenz as the leader in the premium segment. The short clip that Daimler’s biggest rival, #BMW, dedicated to the German engineer is nothing but another proof of the incredible impact that Dieter Zetsche had over the #automotive industry as a whole. What do you think of the “Moustache CEO”? Whom would you like to see as the next automotive MVP?
