29 years ago today, writer/director William Peter Blatty and @morgan_creek released what would become my all-time favourite horror film, 'Exorcist III'. Functioning as a direct sequel to William Friedkin's 1973 masterpiece 'The Exorcist' (based on Blatty's novel of the same name), this film completely (and rightfully) ignores the 1977 farce 'Exorcist II: The Heretic'. One aspect that makes 'Exorcist III' stand out from its predecessors is that it isn't a straight up horror flick. There are horror elements (it's a scary movie, and boasts what is, in my opinion anyway, the greatest jump-scare of all time), but it's also a drama, a psychological thriller, a whodunit, and oddly, a comedy.
The dialogue is elegant, natural and funny, the subject matter ranges from disturbing to outright horrifying, and the performances mainly from George C. Scott (who takes over the role of Kinderman, played by Lee J. Cobb in the first film), Jason Miller, @braddourif, and Ed Flanders (diddly!) are outstanding.
I also love how this flick re-contextualizes the first movie. We learn that the malevolent force is not only evil, but also capable of spite and revenge.
