The Kanheri Caves, amongst the lush green forests of Sanjay Gandhi National Park in Borivali Mumbai, is a site of historic and religious significance. Dating back to 1st Century B. C. E. to 11th Century C. E, the Kanheri caves are a group of over 100 ancient Buddhist caves revered for their archaeological brilliance. The caves are divided into two categories - Chaitya-Grihas or prayer halls and Viharas or caves for monks to reside
The Bavanbuti Sarees from the collection “Sanghamitra“ are woven in the Nalanda Buddhist Belt and historically the Kanheri Caves too have had a strong connection with the Nalanda Chapter of Bihar (so much so that a few seals of Nalanda style, dated 8th Century C. E., were discovered in the Kanheri Caves)
