Take Time To Look Up

Aloha, there is a situation I would like to make known to you all. -
You've probably heard that the TIO has submitted a lease permit for the Canary Islands but don't doubt their desire to still want Mauna Kea for TMT. Governor Ige has extended the TMT lease two years (2021). Canada's involvement in TMT is both through government and private industry. There are two critical components Canada is supplying TMT, the adaptive optics system (NFIRAOS) and the Calotte dome enclosure. Without AO which allows the telescope to see past our atmosphere and the dome which protects the telescope, TMT can't operate.

For the first time in Canada we have a Prime Minister, Justin Trudeau, who is taking indigenous rights more seriously. In a statement on indigenous rights Justin Trudeau said the following: -
"The Government of Canada must make the recognition and implementation of rights the basis for all relations between Indigenous Peoples and the federal government." -

This should apply to the rights of Hawaiians in the handling of the TMT construction on Mauna Kea and the Government of Canada's involvement through the National Research Council.
-
So please, let our Prime Minister know how you feel. Ask him to support the relocation of TMT on a site that does not conflict with indigenous peoples. It just takes one partner to change their mind, let it be Canada.
