#repost Our alumni are up to great things! <br />@naneaa Warning: long post. This weekend has mentally re-energized my mind and soul. Going to Mauna Kea has been such a grounding experience. As a social worker, we learn to be culturally competent of those we work with and those we serve. This means to be understanding of the beliefs and perspectives of others as well as having an open mind to gain knowledge in the practices of individuals. Regardless if you grew up in Hawai’i, if you’re Hawaiian or not, whether you are pro or aʻole TMT, I can guarantee you even for just a day or a weekend you will gain some knowledge of the Hawaiian culture and why this is so important to kanaka maoli. I’ve been hesitant to raise my voice in this for fear of not being “Hawaiian enough”. But that just didn’t sit right in my naʻau for a while. After spending the weekend in the elements amongst others who are striving for that knowledge, it only motivates me more to be competent in my own culture and to educate others along the way.
