#TheSparrow is one of those #sciencefiction novels that somehow managed to convince everyone it's not "genre fiction," despite the fact that its plot revolves around the discovery of #extraterrestriallife and a voyage to an #alien planet. Written nearly twenty years ago, The Sparrow follows two timelines: said discovery and journey, and the present day (2060) testament of Father Emilio Sandoz, #jesuit priest, #linguist, and the only surviving member of the mission. Though "surviving" is perhaps used here in only the strictest sense. #MaryDoriaRussell did a fantastic job of synthesizing a great many scientific and philosophical subjects, packing her book with plenty for the more scientifically- or philosophically-inclined without getting bogged down in either. Russell takes care to leave judgment out of the picture: we even get a few chapters from the alien perspective, a welcome reminder that the #morality and #ethics we take for granted are not, in fact, universally objective. This is a fascinating read, though emotionally difficult at times.
