Being indoctrinated by a coach to hit X numbers each day with this success or failure belief and no flexibility outside of that instills the fear and angst about your progress that makes macros destructive. The fear around going over your macros, eating a โbadโ food despite being within your range or fear of sabotaging your weight loss.
-โจA flexible dieting intention inside of a rigid lifestyle will backfire. This can result in compensatory behaviors (i.e. more cardio the next day), greater hyper vigilance of food and avoidance (staying much lower than your allotted numbers) or binge eating. Ultimately, itโs about how macros are being integrated into your life.

Macros feel safe because they offer a guide of flexibility, when in fact they cause a rigidity in lifestyle - the opposite of safe.
-
The other side of how macros is destructive is because many have this belief that tracking and thus weight loss is the solution to their unconscious need for attention, control, approval, self-love, worthiness and confidence. Macros becomes a secondary problem of the central issue of pursuing weight loss.
-
Counting macros or weight loss is a reflection of wanting control, which I think is something many donโt realize theyโre after.
-โจThink about adult children of alcoholics. They grow up with a constant need for control because they were taught young how to behave in order to control the unpredictability of their parent. If we control macros, we can then prevent any unforeseen mistakes with our dieting. We predict safety.
-
The truth is that healing the psychological self-limiting beliefs, emotions and wounds thatโs underpinning these eating patterns and behaviors will yield unconditional attention, approval, self-love and acceptance derived from you - youโll be receiving it from yourself under new terms instead of the terms of the scale or someone else.
