One of my favourite birds that we came across in California is the Steller’s Jay, full of personality and the most beautiful shades of blue, lighter underneath and richer on the back. And that perky crest with the slashes of blue over the eyes are hard to ignore.
The Steller’s Jay covers a fair section of territory from Canada to Mexico, but only down the west coast. The rest of the US is covered by the more widely known Blue Jay.
I chased these all through the forests of Sequoia NP with frustratingly limited success (especially frustrating for my wife when I kept stopping or veering off on our hikes) and then they were virtually coming to find us when we went to Kings Canyon. Go figure.
