The thing that isn’t there. Do you see it? If I had not seen it glide over my head like a magic carpet and blend into the foliage, I’d have missed it, too, and I’d have walked past it like the many morning walkers enveloped in the aural atmosphere of their headphones. A few stopped by, curious at what had arrested my attention. And when they saw it, they gasped in wonderment. Is it a bat? Is it a squirrel? It was neither. It was the creature I had come here in search of - the Malayan Colugo (Galeopterus variegatus). Or, as some call it, the Flying Lemur (though it’s not related to the lemurs of Madagascar). Its olive-green, lichen-patterned coat makes this arboreal creature of twilight impossible to discern as it rests by day in the canopy.
