Copped this #handmade #silk #satin dress in #shanghai from a #localdesigner (who used to be a pattern maker master for the big famous brands). This is made from a precious old #silk bale from the 70s, making this fabric #somewhat #antique (almost 50 years old😱) but still in such a good condition. The design philosophy is the expression of Han Chinese clothing today, with the signature double-breasted style collar, seamless sleeves, button closure (no zippers). It has a #beautiful #drape and #subtle #lustre, #hard to find in most #silk today. Was told that it’s close to impossible to #weave silk of such quality for 2 reasons - such wooden looms where someone weaves while the master adjusts the panels are almost #extinct today (the looms have been replaced with machines), and the quality of silk from the silkworms have deteriorated drastically because of #urbanisation and #industrialisation in #suzhou, the hometown of 100 year old mulberry trees which feed the silkworms.
