The beautiful colors of Milos Island’s boat houses are so reminiscent of Murano Island on the outskirts of Venice, Italy. Just as with Murano, the fishermen would paint the houses vibrant colors to make it easier to spot as they came in from a long day of fishing.
However, these houses on Milos’ are unique in that the bottom floor (known as the ‘syrmata’) was meant to protect the boat or equipment from the elements and the family would live on the upper floors.
Today, these villages are mostly uninhabited or have been converted to @airbnb hideaways. Either way, they sure are beautiful to look at!
