The Witches premieres in only 879 US theaters (three months after its release in the UK) with a $2.2 million opening weekend, placing 10th behind Darkman, Ghost, Flatliners, Presumed Innocent, My Blue Heaven, The Exorcist III, Men at Work, Taking Care of Business, and Air America. The film is based on the 1983 children’s novel of the same name by Roald Dahl. It was the final film Jim Henson worked on before his death, and also the last film to be released based on Dahl’s work while Dahl was still alive. Anjelica Huston’s Grand High Witch prosthetics took six hours to apply, and another six to remove. The film would go on to make only $10.3 million total in the US, the 98th biggest movie of 1990.
