This book was actually an unexpected gift from Secret Church for participating in their 2019 event on the same topic. Piper writes some dense books and this one is no exception, though it is a pretty short read and easy to get through. The Secret Church event and this book has definitely been the most expansive treatment I've ever heard on the discipline of fasting and I was very much so educated and challenged by this read. In a consumer culture such as ours it's easy to be blinded by comfort, but all of world history, and especially the Christian ethic, testify to the benefit of disciplining our desires.
