I had soo much trouble reviewing this book! I originally marked it as 3 stars on my goodreads but I’ve since thought about it and bought it down. I’m trying to be really strict with myself about my star ratings and 3 stars are for books that I like but I didn’t love. This book to me was just okay. It was kind of meh which was so disappointing. •
I think my feelings for this book are partially my own fault. I’ve never been a big fan of mystery but I was intrigued by the fantasy setting. The world itself though threw me off a lot, I had to keep flipping back to the start to figure out which quadrant they were talking about. I also think mystery needs to be done right, it has to be a little bit predictable because people love figuring bits out but it can’t be too predictable that there’s no surprise. I personally guessed a lot more than I would have liked but even before that, if you’d told me who killed the queens while I was reading I probably would have just shrugged and gone meh 🤷🏻♀️

In brighter news, I really enjoyed Astrid Scholte’s writing! I will definitely read more from her in the future because I love how she writes. A few days before I started this book I actually heard her speak and she talked about being afraid of drowning and how it comes out in her writing and I saw that immediately! •
So unfortunately not my favourite read of the year, I had high hopes for it but it just didn’t really live up 🤷🏻♀️
