A sleep on the earth
Under limbs tenanted
With late summer
Not worried by stars.

Of organ-isms churn
Humus for leftover life.
Ticks parlay for purchase to
Stay above nematode slime.

Whines in the air
Bothersome and hot
Cooler by the river
And its liquid decay
Sporting fish and pollywogs
Snakes of life along the way.

I revel in well conditioned air
In Kabul I was covered
By dust thousands of years
In creation - dead skin
Fragments of blood
And mountains

The most exquisite flowers
Having bloomed and gone.
Tiny remembrances
To wash from hands
And eyes
And feet.
