I completed my first mural a few weeks ago! A friend of mine in marketing had designed this thank you for a store. They wanted it painted. I’m so thankful we were able to make this happen.
While this was my first time, I still thought some of you might be interested in the process.
1. We used a projector to display it on the wall and I traced it with a pencil. The thank you is about 20 ft x 4.5 ft.
2. Because the projection was so blown up the little letters especially were blurry. I got their placement from the projection, but I had to rely on my knowledge of letterforms to build/sketch the letters on the wall. Also our computer died before I was finished tracing, so I had to free hand a few of the letters.
3. Painting. Lots and lots of painting. This took about twice the number of hours that we predicted. I’m a perfectionist and the letters were small enough that I used a quite tiny brush, even on the thank you.
4. Erasing the pencil lines. I tried an eraser (shown in the video) but it didn’t work great. I ended up using a magic eraser and then going back in with paint to touch up and white the magic eraser left on the black.
5. Touch ups. Trying to fix all the wobbles and not quite solid black spots.
•
So there it is. My first mural. Well maybe more like signage, but I’m still so grateful for this opportunity. I hope it leads to more murals and large scale paintings in the future!
Let me know if you have any questions!
#mural #signage #handpainted #handlettering #handlettered #handpainting #process #processvideo #behindthescenes #artprocess #artinprocess #trysomethingnew #keepgrowing #newopportunities #thankyou #shoplocal #supportlocal #muralart #muralpainting #muralartist #createexplore #createexplorediscover #createeveryday #daretocreate #makersgonnamake #makersmovement #southernillinois #siuc

So there it is. My first mural. Well maybe more like signage, but I’m still so grateful for this opportunity. I hope it leads to more murals and large scale paintings in the future!
