The movie Brightburn was surprisingly good. SPOILERS AHEAD. I’m not sure why it got such bad reviews. I was a huge fan of the Superman: Red Son comics and this was very similar. What would happen if Superman decided to be evil? A great story, that’s what. In the Superman: Red Son story, his ship crash lands in communist Russia during the Cold War and Superman subsequently becomes evil. This story was a bit different because an otherwise sweet kid who lands in Kansas (like Superman in the main story line) starts to hear voices from an entity within the ship he crash landed in. The voices convince him to “take the world.” The movie was listed in the horror genre and I think that’s where the producers may have gone wrong because, while there was gore and a few attempts at jump scares, it was not a horror movie. It somewhat reminded me of ‘The Boys’ comic and show, so what ever genre that series is, that’s where this story fits. The movie was well acted and even had funny moments. I believed that the victims were scared and I believed that the parents could be in denial about who their son is and what he is capable of. I recommend seeing this movie, especially now that it’s available for rent or to stream. -
