At about 1AM last night, I finished my 20th feature-length screenplay. It’s a genre-hybrid/deconstruction detailing a tense handoff between the Yakuza and the Mafia, and the affair’s unlucky translator. One goal was to consistently undercut genre seriousness with whatever made me laugh hardest at the situation, while always empathizing with the characters. I think the result is a bit of a departure for me. Usually, no matter how proud of a script I end up being, or how hard I worked on it, I just want it out of my sight at this stage — that hasn’t happened yet! Starting from a blank page and creating characters, an atmosphere, and rules to break remains one of the most rewarding parts of the process for me; the rigid structure of film scripting is ideal for containing and directing my ideas. My goal in the coming year: Move away from short films, and fully realize 1 of the 20! ☺️🎬
