Our first ever helicopter ride! It was so cool to see the island from a different perspective. Our pilot took us along the East side of the island, visiting black sand coastlines, the recent lava flows, and peeking at the waterfalls north of Hilo. Pictured here is Pu’u Ō’ō, a cinder cone from Kilauea Volcano. It had been almost continuously erupting from 1983 until the Spring of 2018, right before the lava flows at Leilani Estates began. Seeing Big Island from this perspective reminds us how extraordinarily fascinating and powerful this planet truly is.
