Illustrating African American culture during the height of the Harlem Renaissance, Archibald J. Motley Jr.'s "Black Belt" gives us a glimpse into the bustling streets packed with people on their way to jazz clubs, theatres, cafes, and gambling joints. Like many of the pieces he painted in the late 1920's and early 1930's, "Black Belt" consists of visual correlatives for African American music and speech during this era. .
