Jennifer Lopez gives a powerhouse performance in Hustlers, a film barely capable of matching the actress’ bravura and vicious bite. She commands every scene, in turn swallowing up the trivial film, which is a run-of-the-mill portrait of the days in a life of female strippers. Lopez and her gang of dancers, after the 2008 stock market crash, hope to get back at the guys of Wall Street who frequent their club by drugging them and running up their credit cards. We see them lavishly party and spend the money on expensive gifts for themselves and each other. Nothing else is depicted. The film could soar if it took time to see how these woman got involved with some of the men of Wall Street or if it decided to peer a little closer into their characters’ lives for just a bit. Instead we get a picture that’s content to simply stand Star-gazed at all the exuberance and wealth the characters enjoy.
