MOVIE REVIEW

Rambo: Last Blood (2019)

Hearing all these negative reviews, made me think, hmm, maybe I should’ve skipped this franchise. But I am very pleasantly surprised at how much I enjoyed this final installment. So let’s get to the bad. The story, as always, is very generic. This movie has the most plot of any of these movies, but it just feels like I’ve seen it before, i.e. Taken. Rambo’s niece gets kidnapped, and he has to go save her. That’s about it. But then at the end it’s Home Alone, but it’s with guns and it’s a lot more violent. And that is easily my favourite sequence of the entire franchise. Rambo running through the tunnels, all his traps going off killing all of these Mexican cartel guys, it’s so satisfying to watch. You really have to watch it for yourself to understand where I’m coming from. And excluding that third act, the action is pretty brutal as well. Rambo actually pulls a guy’s rib out so far that it’s visible. Brutal stuff, but it’s fun to watch. And Stallone is at his best in this movie. He actually gets to act. This movie has the most dialogue of any Rambo movie too. And that’s a very good thing, because it’s been mostly action up until now. But the script isn’t good. At least we get some conversations that do a lot for his character. And this movie does more for him than the previous 4 combined. He’s vulnerable this time round. He’s old. He’s not invincible action man Rambo. And that’s a side of Rambo that we haven’t gotten yet and it makes me care for the character a lot more than before. But other than Rambo, these characters aren’t really anything special. Everyone except maybe Gabriela is pretty forgettable. The directing is also great in this movie. It’s very personal, especially with Rambo. I did like Stallone’s directing a little more, but the way the action is captured here just makes the movie all that more fun. Not a lot of memorable shots cinematography wise, but I did like the distinct color tone at Rambo’s ranch. I’d say Rambo 3 had the best ensemble of characters. Overall, despite my expectations, Rambo: Last Blood is a decent enough end to a franchise, that I hope has met its end, with it's best entry yet.

5.9/10
