I am super excited to officially announce and welcome the 6th species of turtle to the state of Colorado! It’s been a long time coming to get the Smooth Softshell (Apalone mutica) State Record sorted out, but the end result is still incredible. Two individuals are officially documented for the state record, one found by myself (with Rob and Nick Kruetzer and Anthony Berardi) in the Purgatorie River and another by Lauren Livo in the Arkansas (both Otero County). Since the initial records, now published in Herp Review Issue 50.3, I have documented an additional observation with two other known sightings taking place. Thank you to Lauren Livo for helping with the record and writing up this publication, as well as the other COPARC members noted for their contributions. I’m excited to see what’s next and it’s time to add some more observations for this species! #StateRecord #ColoradoHerping #Herping #Colorado #Turtles #SmoothSoftshellTurtle #SmoothSoftshell #ColoradoWildlife #ColoradoParksandWildlife #ColoradoPARC #PARC #COPARC #Conservation #SaveTheTurtles #Apalone #ApaloneMutica #ColoradoTurtles #Reptiles #Photography #TheColoradoSnakeHunters
