With a wealth of history, the village of Charlton in London was recorded in the Domesday Book as Cerletone which roughly translates to “farmstead of the freemen/peasants”. There has been a church dedicated to St Luke on this site since around 1077! The current building dates back to 1630 and was built with funds supplied by Adam Newton. Newton lived in Charlton House across the road and was the tutor of James I’s eldest son Prince Henry who died young and unfortunately never saw Charlton House finished. PM Spencer Percival is buried in the church as well as Edward Drummond. Unfortunately, both were murdered in politically motivated plots! It’s a lovely church and should be paired up with a visit to Charlton House as well!
