Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi (1869-1948) was an Indian activist who led the Indian independence movement against British colonial rule.
Inspired by writers like Tolstoj, Gandhi implemented nonviolent civil disobedience as a form of protest. Gandhi considered himself a disciple of Tolstoj, and they exchanged several letters between 1908-1910.
Ghandis non-violence protest would later inspire several civil rights movements across the globe.
He also wrote books, and considered education to be vital.
