While planting on a recent project I found several large cicada nymphs (all were returned to their feeding areas). Cicadas are fascinating insects in the Order Hemiptera (true bugs). The nymph and larval stages of the cicada feed on root exudes, but do not damage their host plants. After 2 to several or more years they emerge from the soil, molt, and climb to create their loud mating calls. The adult cicadas do not feed. The males announce the warmth of summer with their calls from July to late September... perhaps this one will climb from the soil in a year... or more. We have at least 5 species of cicada native to Minnesota that have been described in literature.
