So I recently saw It: Chapter 2
I went in absolutely knowing I would LOVE this movie....I've never been so incredibly wrong.
Spoiler free thoughts: Chapter 1 was so good imo because while it wasn't a line for line adaptation, it did a brilliant job of communicating the same themes and building off them. They completely abondoned this for chapter 2. They all but spit in the face of the themes. It felt incredibly disrespectful.
Even looking at it as just a movie and not an adaptation, it's still bad. The plot didn't make sense, the characters didn't have good chemistry in my opinion, and the actors I KNOW can do a great job at actually acting just DIDN'T for some reason.
It also tried to be a comedy which I didn't care for. Yes, I think horror should have funny moments. It makes the scary moments more intense, but this was too much.
Spoiler Ridden Thoughts:
Making Richie gay could've been good. In fact I'll say it's one of the few things they did right when you view it as a modernization because it fits with the theme of being othered. Would have been great if, again, they didn't spit in the face of every other theme.
Childhood belief and it's magic mostly.
This is a nit-pick but it bugged me: they made a HUGE deal with skateboard kid yet REFUSED to have him say the famous line from the book "You can't be careful on a skateboard mister." They had so many opportunities and just didn't. It bothered me because again it feels like disrespect.
Also it dropped like 2 major plot points. Bev's abusive husband and Bill's wife. If the movie didn't want to bring them into the plot, it shouldn't have shown them.
It wanting them to come back as also completely out of character and made no sense.
Overall: extremely disappointing. Chapter 1 is great for the kids part of the book, for the full story watch the old movie or read the book.
What are your thoughts? Should I do more reviews?
