Holy Corneal Ulcer Batman! 👁🤕 This pet presented the other day for “goopy eye discharge” and “his eye looks odd”. 😮
Just taking one look at the eye before staining it I knew this dog had an ulcer! 👀
Corneal epithelium is a great barrier against bacteria. Compromise that and the eye could end up like this pup’s! With small scratches to the cornea where only some of the epithelium is damaged, healing time is short. If the ulcer becomes infected then it can lead to a melting ulcer!
Quick lesson: Superficial ulcer that becomes infected ➡️ Bacteria release enzymes (Proteases and collagenases) ➡️ Enzymes attack cornea ➡️ Eye reacts by sending white blood cells to tear film to fight infection ➡️ WBCs release enzymes that contribute to corneal destruction ➡️ Melting Ulcer // 🕯
Ulcers can turn south very quickly so it’s important to refer if not comfortable managing before it’s too late. Ohhh and don’t use Steroids!! BIG NO NO! ❌
Thankfully this pup got to an ophthalmologist and is on the road to recovery 👁👁
