Mother! Gets a 5/10 from The Cinema-Fan! Despite having great cinematography, an amazing cast, and some good performances, Mother! falls short of excellence. This movie was recommended to me by friends whose opinions on film I respect, but unfortunately I did not agree. The main problem with this movie is that its attempts at being subtle and symbolic turn out to be painfully obvious and straightforward. It’s clear from the get-go (unless you’re completely unaware of Bible stories) that the film is a grotesque view on Christianity. Due to that, the movie delivers a very drawn out and predictable plot. The film relies way too heavily on shock value which makes the film feel cheap. It’s uncomfortable, depressing, and strange, but not in a good way. Honestly, if the movie was more abstruse about its message it would’ve been much more enjoyable. The whole thing felt frantic, disjointed, and boisterous. The cast is amazing, but extremely undervalued. Mother! is basically a one-man show featuring Jennifer Lawrence getting upset about all the crazy things happening around her. You don’t really care about anyone or anything because the film feels so out of touch with reality that it’s impossible to feel connected to any character. Overall, Mother! is a film built around symbolism, but the attempts at being symbolic of Christianity felt unimaginative, lazy, and plain as day. It’s a shame that the story ruined what could’ve been a great film. How’d you enjoy Mother!?
