'Half of a Yellow Sun' by Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie. I was given this book many years ago without knowing anything about it and I was gripped from the beginning. Adichie's writing is like poetry, and her storytelling is so immersive that it conjured up some uncomfortable feelings, which doesn't often happen when I read books.
Without giving much away, this book is set in the 1960's in Nigeria during the civil war. The story follows a few different characters as they survive through the conflict. You have to read the rest!
