Raising Monarchs you learn a few valuable lessons. Of our 33 caterpillars we lost 6. 1 Chrysalis fell during metamorphosis in the rain. 2 Never made it out of their chrysalis. 2 made it out but couldn’t properly inflate their wing So they wouldn’t ever be able to fly. 1 made it out safely and looked perfect yet couldn’t fly. ( In these tough situations we place them on tasty flowers so they can drink and experience a few days of butterfly life before Mother Nature decides their fate.) although it may seem cruel or heartbreaking it’s our job to replicate natural events. Realistically nature must keep a balanced ratio at all times to ensure a healthy echo system...the ugly truth is not everyone survives. The best we can do is provide them with a safe haven free from parasites, predators, pesticides & insecticides. ( sadly many people will not grow milkweed because it’s not the most beautiful plant or they may view the monarch caterpillars as pests. Those who have milkweed know it is not only a monarchs food source, egg nursery but a life raft for the species.) Tough but Necessary lessons for kids to learn. (on a positive note 27 beautiful & healthy monarchs emerged! Our biggest generation yet!
