Comics in English-speaking countries have long been dominated by superheroes and as the superhero seems to be a particularly American invention, the medium has often struggled in places like Australia and Britain. Enter 2000AD in 1977, originally cashing in on the 70s sf boom (note the starring role of Dan Dare) but its longevity proving that satire and science fiction could produce a successful weekly British comic.
