Chiharu Shiota (b. Osaka, 1972) is a multi-media Japanese artists based in Berlin. Best known for her beautiful thread installations, Shiota’s work has been shown at various institutions across the world, from the Freer Sackler in Washington, D.C., to the Sydney Biennale. Inspired by Ana Mendieta and taught by Marina Abramovic, her work not only places an emphasis on performance and process, but is also “marked by a powerful nostalgia that is dark and deeply effecting” (from Art Radar Journal). Her large-scale installations often take up entire rooms and are extremely complex at a technical level. Everything she uses to create her installations have specific purposes: for example, her use of thread over paint allows her to “explore breathe and spaces... [and] create unlimited spaces that seem to gradually expand,” and her use of black and red string has to do with her understanding of the differences between communication and ancestry (from Art Radar Journal). Her work is evocative, poetic, and deals with human life and death.
Shiota became increasingly popular starting in the late 2010s, and her status as an international artist was confirmed when she represented Japan at the 56th Venice Biennale in 2015. Since then, Shiota has been at the Melbourne Art Festival, the SCAD Museum of Art in Georgia, and the Koshi Museum of Art in Japan, to list a few. She is represented by a number of blue chip international galleries, including Blain Southern and GalerieTemplon.
#winstagram #japaneseartists #womeninart #freersackler #biennale #stringtheory #installation #performanceart #contemporaryasianartsits #thekeyinhand #overthecontinents

All copyrights belong to the artist.
