Israeli Warship Crossed Into Lebanese Waters
Lebanon claimed on Sunday (14th July) that an Israeli warship had breached its territorial waters.
According to Lebanese TV channel LBC, the ship crossed over near a beach in Israel’s Rosh Hanikra, a coastal region in the north that borders Lebanon. The ship was detected by UNIFIL forces off the coast of the Rosh Hanikra land border between Israel and Lebanon. According to UN peacekeeping force UNIFIL, the incident lasted only several minutes before the vessel returned to Israeli waters.
The Israel Defense Forces did not immediately respond to questions about the alleged incident and would not confirm the report’s veracity. The incident comes a month after Israel and Lebanon were reported to have made significant progress toward opening direct talks on officially demarcating the maritime border between the two countries, with the first round of direct negotiations now expected to take place in July.
The maritime border between Israel and Lebanon has been a point of dispute, with negotiations making a significant breakthrough in May with Israel’s approval of Beirut’s proposal on the border’s demarcation.
Israel and Lebanon do not have diplomatic relations but have clashed repeatedly over the unsolved maritime border dispute, right in the vicinity of regional underwater fossil fuel reserves.
